Blokus night — grab list

Blokus is a dedicated polyomino set. Until you own the branded box, keep CATAN as a deeper territory cousin, Connect 4 as a fast abstract warm-up, and Exploding Kittens as the party reset.

What Blokus is

Blokus is an abstract strategy game for 2–4 players. Each color gets a set of polyomino pieces (shapes made of 1–5 squares). Players take turns placing one piece on the board. Pieces of the same color may touch only at corners — never along a full edge. The goal is to place as much of your set as possible; leftover squares count against you.

Setup

  • Board is a square grid (classic Blokus is 20×20).
  • Each player picks a color and takes all pieces of that color.
  • First pieces typically start in the four corners of the board (confirm your edition).

On your turn

  • Place exactly one remaining piece of your color.
  • New piece must touch at least one corner of your existing pieces.
  • Edges of same-color pieces must not touch.
  • You may touch opponents along edges — blocking is the point.
  • If you cannot place, you pass for the rest of the game.

Scoring

When all players pass, count uncovered squares on each leftover piece. Lowest leftover total wins (some sheets award bonuses for emptying your set). Teach scoring before round one.

Beginner tips

  • Save flexible small pieces for late-game holes.
  • Expand toward the center early; corner-camping alone loses board.
  • Watch opponents’ large pentominoes — deny their landing zones.
  • Play a teaching game with open advice before competition mode.

Common mistakes

  • Allowing same-color edge touches — restart that placement.
  • Forgetting corner-only contact for your color.
  • Burning all tiny pieces early.
  • No posted start-corner rule for your edition.

FAQ

Is Blokus good for kids?

What if we do not own Blokus yet?

Play abstract warm-ups with Connect 4 or a longer territory night with CATAN, then add Blokus to the wishlist.

After Blokus energy?

Teaching script (20 minutes)

Round 1: place with open advice and narrate the corner rule out loud. Round 2: silent competition. Score leftovers so the rule feels real.

  • Start in the corners.
  • Save small pieces.
  • Call illegal edge-touches immediately and replay the piece.

If you do not own the set yet

Warm up with Connect 4, run a longer night with CATAN, and encore with Exploding Kittens. Add Blokus when you can verify the branded set — do not pretend another box is Blokus.
