How to Play Cross the Line (Walmart Party Game)
How well do your friends actually know you — not your favorite pizza topping, but the weird, honest, slightly awkward stuff? Cross the Line is the Walmart Game of the Month–style party icebreaker where one player secretly slides a line to their answer on a scale, and everyone else bets confidence bars on where that line really is.
Think Wavelength energy, but you’re guessing a person’s real answer on a prompt — then scoring when your bar touches the truth. Ages about 10–12+, roughly 2–8 players, about 30 minutes. SFW mixer vibes. No phones. Maximum “wait, you believe in ghosts?” follow-ups.

Walmart-exclusive party icebreaker with the sliding line board, double-sided question cards, confidence bars, and scoring meeples. Perfect for mixers, friend hangs, and “we just met but we’re already competitive” nights.
What is Cross the Line?
Cross the Line is an interactive party game from the Asmodee / Gray Matters lane: draw a double-sided card, choose a side, secretly set your answer on a sliding scale (the “line”), hide it, then watch friends place confidence bars where they think you landed. Reveal. Bars that touch the line score. First to 12 (or highest when someone hits 12) wins.
It’s an icebreaker with a scoreboard — playful, a little awkward, and great for groups that like talking almost as much as winning.
What’s in the box
- Cross the Line device / board — the sliding-line answer scale (often nests in the box bottom)
- 100 double-sided question cards — pick a side each turn
- 24 confidence bars — typically valued 1 / 2 / 3 (narrower / bolder bets score more when they hit)
- 8 scoring meeples — track points on the score track
Compact setup, one-page rule energy, and enough cards for more than one party before anyone complains they’ve “seen them all.”
Setup
- Give each player a set of confidence bars in their color.
- Place each player’s scoring meeple at the start of the score track.
- Shuffle the question cards and set them near the board.
- Seat the Cross the Line board where everyone can reach it (box-bottom groove setups are common — follow your insert).
- Pick a starting answerer. Smile like you know everyone’s secrets. You don’t. Yet.
How to play (one round)
- Answerer draws a card and chooses which side to use.
- Answerer secretly slides the line to the spot on the scale that matches their honest answer, then hides the line so others can’t see it.
- Starting with the player to the answerer’s left (or as printed), everyone else places one confidence bar where they think the line is. Use a 1, 2, or 3 bar — bolder (usually narrower) bets are worth more if they touch.
- Reveal the line. Any confidence bar that touches the line scores its point value for that player.
- Clear the bars, advance meeples, and pass the answerer role. Keep going.
- Win condition: first player to reach 12 points triggers the end — highest score wins (if multiple people are piled up, highest total takes it).
Why the confidence bars matter
A timid 1-point bar is easier to land and keeps you on the board. A spicy 3-point bar is how you catch up — or miss completely and watch someone else cross 12 first. Reading the room is half the game; reading your best friend is the other half.
Tips for hosts & common mistakes
- Pick cards that spark talk. The best prompts create follow-up questions. That’s the icebreaker working.
- Answer honestly. If the answerer trolls every line, guessing becomes noise and the table gets bored. Play in good faith; roast afterward.
- Hide the line carefully. Don’t telegraph with your hand position while sliding — other players will clock it.
- When unsure, play the 1. Scoring something beats scoring zero while someone else rockets to 12.
- Copying is legal and hilarious. If the person who knows the answerer best went first, you can absolutely “agree” with their bar placement.
- Keep it SFW for mixed groups. Cards often include lighter options on at least one side — choose the side that fits the room (family hang vs adult friend night).
Who it’s for (gift + party fit)
Cross the Line is a strong pick for:
- Icebreaker / mixer hosts who want structure, not just “so… how do you know the couple?”
- Friend groups that love “how well do you know me?” energy
- Walmart run gifts in the party-game aisle
- Families / teens / adults in the ~10–12+ range when you stick to softer card sides
Less ideal if your table only wants filthy fill-in-the-blank decks — this one wins on conversation and soft competition, not roast-battle chaos.
