How to Play Hitster Music Bingo
Classic Hitster is the timeline music duel — scan a song, argue about the year, build a chronological line until someone hits ten. Hitster Music Bingo is a different game in the same music-party family: a light-up disco-ball spinner picks a category, everyone listens at once, and the first to complete a bingo row wins.
Same free Hitster app. Same “wait, is this from 1997 or 2003?” energy. Totally different win condition. Ages 16+, 2–10 players, about 30 minutes, Walmart exclusive around $29.97. If you already know the timeline rules, skim our core Hitster how-to later — this post is Music Bingo only.
Grab Hitster Music Bingo at Walmart
US Walmart exclusive — disco-ball timer, double-sided category board, 225 song cards, wipe-off bingo boards. The music-party SKU built for bigger groups.
Related (different game): classic Hitster timeline
Want the original “place the song on the timeline” Hitster instead of Music Bingo? That’s a separate box — same app family, different rules and win condition.
- Related (not Music Bingo): Hitster (classic / timeline edition) — the original year-line party game, not this Bingo SKU
Music Bingo vs classic Hitster (quick contrast)
- Classic Hitster: build a personal timeline of songs by release year; first to a full line (typically 10) wins
- Hitster Music Bingo: spin for a category, answer while the song plays, mark colored spaces on a bingo card; first complete row wins
- Shared DNA: free Hitster app, QR-scanned tracks, decades of hits, party-host chaos
- Compatibility bonus: Music Bingo can also use cards from other Hitster editions for more songs
Buy Bingo if you want simultaneous play for a bigger table. Buy classic Hitster if you want the timeline duel. Owning both is peak music-nerd flex — not required.
What’s in the box
- 1 disco-ball spinner / timer — lights up, spins to pick a category, and runs the answer window (needs 3× AAA batteries, not included)
- 1 double-sided game board — beginner categories on one side, advanced on the other
- 225 music cards — QR codes for the Hitster app; 100+ years of hits
- 6 wipe-off bingo boards + pens — write answers, mark spaces, wipe for rematch
Official player count goes up to 10 — for bigger groups, share boards or improvise with scrap paper once the wipe-offs are spoken for.
Setup
- Install the free Hitster app on a phone and make sure it can play tracks (Hitster’s usual Spotify-backed flow).
- Put batteries in the disco-ball timer and place it on the double-sided category board.
- Choose beginner (side A) or advanced (side B) — beginners are friendlier for mixed music knowledge; advanced wants titles, artists, and tighter year guesses.
- Give each player a wipe-off bingo board and pen.
- Shuffle the song cards into a draw pile. Pick a “DJ” to scan cards (rotate if you want).
- Agree you’re racing for a complete row (bingo). Phones for the app only — no googling the year mid-song.
How to play (one turn)
- Spin the disco ball. The light / pointer lands on one of the five category wedges for the board side you’re using.
- Draw a song card and scan it with the Hitster app so the track starts playing.
- Start the disco-ball timer as the music begins (follow the insert for the exact light / timer cue — it’s a short, high-pressure window).
- Everyone writes their answer for that category on their wipe-off board at the same time.
- Reveal the card answer. Correct answers mark the matching colored space on your bingo card (per the insert / board colors).
- Clear written answers. Next player spins. Keep going until someone completes a full row and calls bingo.
Host tip: keep the DJ honest — once the song starts, no pausing for “one more listen” unless the table agrees. The timer is the vibe.
Beginner vs advanced categories (what you’re guessing)
Exact category names live on the board and insert. Public how-tos describe the beginner side as softer trivia (for example: group vs solo artist, before/after 2000, decade, year within a forgiving range). The advanced side pushes harder: exact song title, exact year, artist/band name, tighter year windows. When a title is “almost right,” the table decides if it counts — house mercy is allowed; arguments are traditional.
Some year categories reward an exact hit more generously than a near miss (including ways to mess with another player’s marked spaces on the beginner-friendly ranges). Follow the printed insert for those edge rewards — don’t invent house revenge mid-song.
Tips, mistakes & party energy
- Pick a board side for the room. Mixed ages / casual listeners → beginner. Music nerds who can smell a 1994 B-side → advanced.
- Don’t confuse this with timeline Hitster. You’re not placing songs in order. You’re answering a category and marking bingo.
- App + batteries before guests arrive. Dead phone or dead disco ball = sad bingo.
- Volume matters. If nobody can hear the intro, answers become chaos. Speaker > laptop tin speakers.
- Rotate the DJ. Scanning every card is a soft power position — share it.
- Mix in other Hitster decks later. Once your table loves Bingo, other Hitster card packs expand the song pool.
- Gift angle: perfect for the friend who already owns classic Hitster and still wants a new party format for 6–10 people.
Who it’s for
Hitster Music Bingo is for:
- Adult music-party hosts who need a bigger player count than timeline Hitster sometimes feels like
- Groups that love karaoke energy without needing actual singing talent
- Walmart run gifts in the ~$30 party aisle
- Anyone who wants bingo that isn’t number-calling grandma night
Less ideal if you refuse phones at the table entirely (you need one device for the app) or if your group only wants silent co-op puzzles. This one is loud on purpose.
