Just One is a cooperative word party game: everyone helps one guesser with a single one-word clue — but identical clues cancel, so “clever” beats “obvious.” The 2025 Refresh keeps the same SdJ-winning loop with a refreshed word deck.

This how-to covers the boxed Just One (2025 Refresh) (ASIN B0FB6MQ3WB): setup, clue cancel rules, scoring to 13, and when to pull it for mixed-age parties.
What’s in the box
- 110 word cards (~550 mystery words) in the 2025 refresh.
- 7 dry-erase easels + matching erasable markers/wipes for clue writing.
- Players: 3–7. Age: 8+. Time: ~20 minutes.
- Feel: cooperative, loud table talk after reveals, zero “gotcha” vs friends — you’re on the same team.
If your group already likes Codenames energy but wants teamwork instead of teams fighting, Just One is the soft landing.
Setup
- Give every player an easel and marker. Keep the wipe nearby.
- Shuffle the word deck. Place it face-down in the center.
- Agree who guesses first (youngest, host, or “most likely to overthink”).
- Decide whether you’re playing a full race to 13 correct guesses (standard) or a shorter “best of 7” warm-up.
No teams. No points per player. Either the group climbs the score track together or you laugh and reshuffle.
How a round works
- Choose a mystery word. The active guesser draws a card without looking, then picks a number (1–5) so the table knows which word on the card is live — or follow your edition’s “random number” method.
- Everyone else writes one clue on their easel — exactly one word. No talking. No pointing. No hyphen cheats that are really two ideas.
- Clue cancel check. Clue-givers compare easels before showing the guesser. Any identical (or effectively identical) clues are flipped/canceled and never shown.
- Reveal remaining clues to the guesser only. If every clue canceled, the guesser gets nothing that round (hard miss).
- One guess. The guesser says the mystery word — or passes. Correct = score a point. Wrong / pass = no point (and in some house rules you peek the word for comedy).
- Rotate the guesser clockwise and keep climbing toward 13.
What counts as “identical”
Exact matches cancel: if two people write Party, both vanish. Close cousins usually cancel too if your table agrees — Birthday vs Birthdays, or obvious synonyms your group treats as the same idea. When in doubt, cancel it; the game is funnier with fewer, sharper clues.
Scoring and how you win
- The group shares one score. 13 correct mystery words is the classic win target.
- Misses don’t erase prior points — they just slow the climb.
- For shorter nights: play 7 rounds and celebrate any streak of unique clues that survive cancel.
Clue strategy that actually works
- Avoid the first word everyone thinks. If the mystery word is “Pizza,” skip “Food” / “Italian” — those collide. Try a personal angle (“Delivery,” “Slice,” “Oven”) that only one of you would write.
- Narrow categories early. Person / place / thing / media helps the guesser triage before hunting the exact noun.
- Don’t stack synonyms. Three people writing “Happy” variants is how you gift the guesser a blank stare.
- House rule for kids: allow proper names and brand names as single words so younger clue-givers aren’t locked out.
When to play Just One
Play it for family gatherings, icebreakers, and any table that hates cutthroat scoring. Teach time is under two minutes.
Skip it if the room wants bluffing (Coup), betting trivia (Wits & Wagers), or spicy fill-in-the-blank humor. Just One is cooperative wordcraft, not roasting.
Common mistakes
- Two-word “one words.” “Ice cream” is two ideas — pick one.
- Showing clues before cancel. Always scrub duplicates first or you leak illegal info.
- Talking during clue writing. Table chatter turns cooperative into telepathy.
- Confusing editions. This guide matches the 2025 Refresh listing (B0FB6MQ3WB); older boxes play the same loop with different word counts/markers.

FAQ
How do you play Just One?
One player guesses a mystery word. Everyone else writes a single one-word clue. Duplicate clues cancel. The guesser sees what’s left and gets one shot. Race the shared score to 13.
How many players?
3–7 with included easels. Two players can house-rule alternate guesser/clue roles, but the cancel mechanic shines at 4+.
Is Just One okay for kids?
Yes for most tables — rated 8+. Parents may still veto obscure adult-culture words; the deck is mixed.
Just One vs So Clover?
Just One = one mystery word + canceling one-word clues. So Clover = build four keyword links on a clover tile, then decode others’ clovers. Same cooperative vibe, different puzzle.
Ready when you are
Easels up, markers uncapped, duplicates doomed. You’ve got setup, cancel rules, scoring, and clue strategy — now make “Birthday” survive the cancel check.
