So Clover! is a cooperative word-association party game: each player builds a four-leaf “clover” of keyword cards, writes one-word links on the leaves, then the table tries to reconstruct every clover. It’s puzzle-y without being mean.

This how-to covers the boxed So Clover! (ASIN B0941TJHXX): clover setup, clue writing, cooperative scoring, and how it differs from Just One.
What’s in the box
- Keyword cards (hundreds of words) plus clover boards / frames for arranging four keywords.
- Dry-erase markers (or equivalent) to write one-word links between adjacent keywords.
- Players: 3–6. Age: 10+. Time: ~30 minutes.
- Feel: cooperative decoding — like a group crossword with personality.
Setup
- Give each player a clover board and a marker.
- Shuffle the keyword deck. Deal four keywords face-up into each player’s clover (one per leaf) — follow your box’s deal count if it includes extras to choose from.
- If your edition lets you draft: deal extras and let each player pick their four before locking the clover.
- Secret note-taking space stays private until the reveal phase.
How to play a round
- Write four links. Between each pair of adjacent keywords on your clover, write one connecting word that somehow bridges both. Example: keywords Ocean + Blue might get the link Navy or Whale — whatever feels uniquely yours.
- Hide your keywords. Once links are written, remove/cover the keyword cards so only your four written clues (and empty leaf slots) show — or follow the exact board method in your rulebook.
- Pass clovers. Players examine others’ clovers and try to place the correct keyword cards back onto each leaf so every link makes sense.
- Score together. For each clover, count how many keywords the group placed correctly. Perfect clovers feel amazing; near-misses are comedy gold.
What makes a good link word
Good links are specific but fair. “Thing” helps nobody. “Tide” between Ocean and Moon is elegant. Inside jokes only work if the whole table shares them — otherwise you’re writing a diary, not a clue.
Scoring
- Cooperative score = total correctly placed keywords across all clovers (or per the sheet in your box).
- Many groups play a fixed number of rounds and try to beat their previous night’s total.
- Optional hard mode: ban repeating the same link style (“color words only”) for a second pass.
Strategy tips
- Balance obscure and obvious. One cryptic leaf + three crystal-clear links usually scores better than four riddles.
- Think bidirectional. The link must work when someone reads either keyword first.
- Watch letter traps. If two keywords share a letter pattern, a vague link can land on the wrong card during rebuild.
- Table talk on decode. Unlike Just One’s silent clue phase, So Clover decoding is a group conversation — use it.
When to play So Clover
Play it for thoughtful parties, couples + friends mixers, and anyone who likes Just One / Wavelength but wants a tactile puzzle.
Skip it if the room is loud-drunk and impatient — Speak Out or a speed party game will land faster.
Common mistakes
- Writing phrases. Links are one word — enforce it or the decode becomes mush.
- Forgetting adjacency. Each link only bridges its two neighboring leaves, not the whole clover.
- Peeking keywords during write. Keep other players’ boards private until the shared decode.
