How to play Trouble (2026) — Pop-o-Matic rules: press the dome, move your pegs, bump, and finish on an exact count. The dice live in the dome so nobody can “drop” a six.
Dice-night pick: Yahtzee rules and the Yahtzee box. Short grid: Connect 4. Card encore: Exploding Kittens.
Pop-o-Matic night — similar picks
Trouble is its own track and dome. If that box is not on the shelf, these are different games you can buy tonight.
- Dice pick: Yahtzee — five dice and a scorecard instead of a track
- Two-player: Connect 4 — no pegs, no dome
- Party encore: Exploding Kittens — when four players want cards
Setup
Each player takes four pegs of one color and puts them in the matching home corner. The board’s track is a loop. The Pop-o-Matic dome sits in the center. Do not open the dome. Pressing it is the roll. Agree who starts — a press-off for highest number is fair.
Getting out and moving
- Press the dome. You need a 6 to move a peg from home onto your start space, unless your edition’s card says otherwise. Many classic boards require 6.
- A 6 that brings a peg out usually also grants another press. Confirm on your rules card; some family prints give the extra press only for leaving home.
- After you are on the track, move clockwise that many spaces.
- You may pass. You may not land on your own peg. If your only moves land on yourself, the turn ends.
Bumps
Land on an opponent’s peg and send it home. That is the trouble. You cannot bump a peg that is already in its finish lane if the edition protects that lane — classic Trouble’s finish slots are safe and color-locked. Pegs in home cannot be bumped because they are not on the track.
Finishing
Each peg must travel the full loop and enter its finish lane by exact count. If you roll higher than the spaces left, you cannot use that roll for that peg; try another peg or pass. First player to park all four pegs in the finish lane wins.
Keeping the dome honest
- One press per roll. Re-pressing because the die “didn’t settle” is a new roll only if the die is visibly cocked against the plastic. Agree that before someone is losing.
- The die must sit flat. If it is leaning, press once more. Don’t fish it with a finger.
- No stacking two pegs to “block.” One peg per space.
Mistakes
- Moving backward. Trouble is one direction.
- Using a 6 to move a peg that is already out, when you still have pegs at home and the table agreed “6s must come out.” Post that house rule or don’t use it.
- Counting the space you are on as square one. Count forward spaces, not the one you occupy.
FAQ
Two players or four?
Two to four. Four is louder because bumps happen every lap. Two is a race with long quiet stretches — fine for kids.
What if the dome cracks?
Play with a normal die and the same track rules. For a different dice game that is in stock, Yahtzee does not need a dome.
