Best games to play with friends when you have nothing (2026) — eight games that need people and a room, not a box. When you want cardboard later, the links at the top are optional upgrades, not required equipment.
If a box appears: Flip 7 · Monikers · game night hub.
Boxed upgrade when the no-prop round gets old
Still a party. These replace “we ran out of categories” without needing a full closet.
- Prompts: Off Topic — a deck so you stop inventing questions
- Wrong answers: Wrong Answers Only — structured nonsense
- Names: Monikers — charades with a real card list
Eight games, no gear
- Categories: pick a letter and a category (animals, cities). Go around. Hesitation loses the letter. Three losses and you are out.
- Contact: one person thinks of a word. Others offer clues that start with the same letter, but must “make contact” (get a second person to blurt the same clue) before the thinker can deflect by naming the word they meant. Needs 4+.
- Hat: everyone writes five names on slips, using napkins if you must. Round 1 describe, round 2 one word, round 3 act. That is Monikers without the box.
- Two truths and a lie: three statements, one false. Group votes. No phones to fact-check unless the table agrees — checking kills it.
- 20 questions: a secret person or object, yes/no only. Set a 20 cap and honor it.
- Psychiatrist: one player leaves. The group picks a rule (“answer as if you are the person to your left”). They re-enter and ask questions to deduce the rule. Kind rules only. No rules that mock a person in the room.
- Mafia, light: 6+ people. Three secret roles on scraps: killer, doctor, detective, the rest town. Night phase with eyes closed, day phase accusations. Cap it at 20 minutes.
- Six degrees: name two celebrities or friends-of-friends and connect them out loud. No winner required. It fills a rideshare.
Hosting with an empty closet
Pick one game and teach it in under a minute. Rotating through all eight is how nobody has fun. Put phones face-down for Contact and Hat; the search bar is an honor-system cheat. Have water out. These games get loud and long.
FAQ
What works for three people?
Categories, 20 questions, and two truths. Mafia and Contact want a bigger circle.
Kids in the room?
Categories, 20 questions, and a clean Hat list. Skip Mafia and anything where the joke is an insult.
