Fun games for a pool party (2026) — what works when hands are wet, someone is not swimming, and you still want a round that is not “splash the new person.” Waterproof cards earn their keep here.
Rules refresh: Taco Cat is a dry-deck game — play it on the patio, not in the water.
Pool-day kit
King's Cup Extreme is the waterproof one. Keep paper decks away from the splash zone.
- Waterproof: King's Cup Extreme — party cards built to get wet
- Dry patio: Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza — slap game for the people on towels
- Shade table: Exploding Kittens — 2–5 under an umbrella
In the water
- Relay with a noodle: teams, one pool noodle, pass at the wall. No diving into people.
- Sharks and minnows: one shark, everyone else crosses. Tag gently. Kids and adults in separate rounds if sizes differ.
- Treasure: sink a few diving rings. First to three. Goggles if the pool is deep or cloudy.
- Card round on the coping: Kings Cup Extreme because a soaked paper deck is trash. Opt in. A pass is free.
On the deck
- People who are not swimming need a job that is not “watch.” Give them the slap game or the snack station with a real task.
- Taco Cat on a dry table. Dry your hands. The cards are not the waterproof deck.
- A speaker at conversation volume. If neighbors can hear lyrics clearly, it is too loud for a backyard.
Host notes that are not optional
- One sober adult watching the water if anyone has been drinking. Games do not replace that.
- No glass on the coping.
- Shade, water that is for drinking, and a time you actually end the pool games so people eat.
FAQ
Can we play Uno in the pool?
Not with a normal deck. Use waterproof cards or play Uno on the dry table. A ruined deck is not a party story worth the money.
If the weather kills the swim
Move the waterproof deck inside only after it is rinsed and dried. Do not shuffle wet cards into a paper game. The patio slap game becomes the living-room plan: same teams, towels on chairs, no running. Have a stated indoor backup before people arrive so you are not inventing rules while someone is disappointed. Lightning means everyone out of the water immediately, games included. No round is worth that argument.
Food stays under a lid. A pool party fails when the only plan was the water and the snacks melted. Assign one person who is not swimming to the cooler. That is a real role.
