Bop It game rules (2026) — the handheld unit calls out a command, you do it before the beat moves on, and one mistake ends your run. The current Bop It! has three actions and four game modes for one player or a whole group. Here’s how each mode works, how scoring goes, and how to run it at a party.

Bop It and other reaction games
The Bop It! unit, plus card games with the same quick-reflex fun.
- The game: Hasbro Bop It! Electronic Game — solo and pass-it modes, ages 8+
- Group reflexes: Happy Salmon — 3–8 players, 90-second rounds
- Slap pile: Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza — say it, slap it, laugh
- Seated closer: Flip 7 — press-your-luck cards
What’s in the box
You get the Bop It! unit and an instruction sheet. It runs on two AAA batteries (demo batteries come installed). It’s rated for ages 8 and up and works with one player or more.
The three actions
- Bop It! — press the white button in the middle.
- Twist It! — twist the yellow knob.
- Pull It! — pull the blue knob.
Hold the unit comfortably and don’t cover the Bop It button. The commands come in random order and speed up as you go.
Turning it on and picking a mode
- Pull the blue knob to turn the unit on.
- Keep pulling it to cycle through the games: Solo, Pass It, Beat Bop Solo, and Beat Bop Pass It.
- Press the Bop It button to start the game you hear.
- To change the volume, twist the yellow knob while it’s on (quiet, loud, or blasting).
The unit goes to sleep after a few seconds of no activity. Pull the blue knob to wake it.
How each mode works
Solo
Follow the spoken commands as fast as you can. Each correct action is one point. Miss one, do the wrong one, or go too slowly and the game ends and calls out your score. It also announces the high score at the start of each solo game. Reach 100 and you’ve beaten Bop It.
Pass It (2+ players)
Play the commands until the unit says “Pass It!”, then hand it to the next player, who keeps going. Miss a command and you hear “You’re out!” The unit then tells the next player to Bop It to keep going. The last player still in wins.
Beat Bop Solo and Beat Bop Pass It
Same idea, but the commands are sound effects instead of words. The bass drum means Bop It, the ratchet means Twist It, and the whistle means Pull It. It’s harder than it sounds, especially when the tempo picks up.
Running Bop It at a party
- Stand in a circle for Pass It so the hand-off is quick and nobody reaches across drinks.
- Do one slow demo round for first-timers before the competitive one.
- Keep a leaderboard on a sticky note for Solo high scores. It turns a five-minute toy into an hour of “one more try.”
- Turn the volume down for apartments or late nights.
Tips for higher scores
- Keep one hand near the knobs and a thumb near the button so you aren’t switching grips.
- Listen for the start of the word, not the whole command.
- Stay relaxed. Squeezing the unit slows down twists and pulls.
- Fresh batteries help. Weak ones can make the unit lag.
