Happy Salmon rules (2026) — there are no turns. Everyone flips a card, shouts the action on it, and races to find a partner with the same card. Then you do the action together and discard. First to clear their hand wins, usually in about 90 seconds. Here’s the setup, all four actions, the three-player variant, and tips for a big group.

What’s in the box
The current Exploding Kittens edition has eight color-coded decks of 12 action cards each, with art by The Oatmeal, and a short rule sheet. That’s enough for 3–8 players, ages 6 and up.
Setup
- Stand around a small table. Standing matters, because you’ll be moving and high-fiving.
- Sort the cards by color. Each player takes one 12-card color deck.
- Shuffle your deck and hold it face-down in one hand. Put any unused decks back in the box.
How to play
On “go,” everyone flips their deck so only the top card is face-up. Shout the action on your card and listen for someone shouting the same thing. When you find a match, do the action together, then both discard that card anywhere out of the way and move on to your next card. Everyone plays at the same time.
The four actions
- High Five: slap palms with your partner. Hold your hand up while you shout to get attention.
- Fish Bump: bump fists. Hold your fist out while you shout.
- Happy Salmon: slap each other’s forearms at least twice, like two fish flapping. Wiggle your hand while you shout.
- Switch It Up: trade places with your partner around the table, taking your deck with you. Spin a finger in the air while you shout.
Can’t find a partner?
Move your top card to the bottom of your deck and try the next one. You still have to match that card eventually, but this keeps you from getting stuck.
How to win
The first player to discard all 12 cards wins. Most rounds are over in a minute or two, so play best of three or five.
Three-player variant
With only three players, everyone removes the Fish Bump cards from their deck. Then give each player one High Five, one Switch It Up, and one Happy Salmon from an unused deck. Everyone ends up with four of each of the other three actions. The colors won’t match, and that’s fine.
Fun variations
- Silent mode: no shouting. Players have to use gestures to find matches. It’s good for libraries, late nights, and very loud bars.
- Big group: more than eight people? Split into two games, or add a second copy so everyone has a deck.
- Tournament: keep a tally of round wins on a sticky note and play to five.
Tips
- Clear drinks and fragile things off the table before round one.
- Act out each action once before the first game so new players know the moves.
- Big hand signals beat louder shouting.
- Gentle forearm slaps for Happy Salmon, especially with kids.
